During a six-week study, students in two fourth grade classrooms studied math vocabulary that focused on fractions. In one classroom, the students looked up the terms in the glossary of the math book and wrote the definitions down on note cards. They used these definitions to study for their test. The other class used graphic organizers (see right) to discuss the terms and definitions, draw illustrations of the words, create examples and non-examples, brainstorm 'light-bulb' words, and write original sentences using the terms. After taking a posttest at the end of the study, the class using the graphic organizer showed far more growth than the class who studied using definitions only.
